Danmarks Nationalbank to issue new banknote series and saying goodbye to the 1000-krone banknote

Danmarks Nationalbank is to launch a new banknote series to replace some of the old series that are currently in circulation. At the same time, the 1000-krone banknote will be withdrawn from circulation.

No rush


Older banknotes and all 1000-krone banknotes will be accepted as legal tender up to and including 31 May 2025. After this date, you can hand in the notes directly to Danmarks Nationalbank for an additional period of one year, meaning the last day for handing in notes will be 31 May 2026.

31 May 2026 is the deadline for handing in banknotes to Danmarks Nationalbank

After 31 May 2025, when retailers and banks no longer accept the notes as legal tender, notes can be handed in to Danmarks Nationalbank for another one year, that is, up until 31 May 2026. This option is expected to become available from the end of 2024. More information about this option will come directly from Danmarks Nationalbank during 2024.
