For good reason, we cannot reveal all the methods we use to combat card fraud. But we can tell you that systems monitor card transactions around the clock and alert us to suspicious payments that do not fit the normal pattern.
However, the sophistication of the monitoring system depends on whether you use a Visa/Dankort or a Mastercard card.
Mastercard
How your card is protected against fraud
Deviations from your personal spending patterns trigger an alert
Mastercard monitors your individual payments and compares them with your personal spending history. This provides individualised and customised monitoring, as the system adjusts to how you specifically normally behave.
Suspicious payments that deviate from your usual pattern trigger an alert and notify both you and us.
Monitors untrustworthy webshops
The security system behind Mastercard also checks whether the webshop where you are shopping and use your Mastercard for payment is listed as an untrustworthy webshop. If you are in the process of transferring an amount to one of the webshops on the list, your purchase will be rejected, and you will be notified.
The list of insecure websites is not exhaustive and is continually expanded. Therefore, we cannot detect all fraud attempts of this type.
Geoblocking
Mastercard features geoblocking. This essentially means the card can be used only in Denmark (and online) and is activated in other parts of the world only when you pay there using the chip and PIN.
Spots potential fraud attempts that target you specifically
Mastercard’s security system can identify potential fraud attempts that target you specifically, and it can react more quickly and accurately to any irregularities.
Visa/Dankort
How your card is protected against fraud
Deviations from general spending patterns trigger an alert
The security system behind the Visa/Dankort card is a form of ‘standard solution’ that analyses payments on the basis of the average behaviour of a broad customer base.
The system identifies suspicious spending activity by comparing it with average spending patterns – but not directly with your personal spending pattern. This can be useful for protection against general threats and ensures a basic level of security for Visa/Dankort cards.
